Major areas of interests are urban conservation and urban regeneration/renewal theories and policies. Through her scholarly works, she questions the vicious relationship between conservation vs regeneration with reference to globalisation and neoliberal planning agenda; and she explores critical heritage studies including the conceptual framework based on heritage industry, heritageisation, memory, inclusive conservation and right to the heritage. 



<short bio>
Zeynep GÜNAY is faculty at the Department of Urban and Regional Planning of Istanbul Technical University [ITU]. She holds a bachelor degree in City and Regional Planning from the Middle East Technical University [2001]. She was awarded diploma with commendation from the Institute of Housing and Urban Development Studies [IHS, Rotterdam, 2003] for the completion of Inner City Development and Housing in Transitional Economies Programme with MATRA Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs Fellowship. She received her first MSc degree with a specialisation on urban conservation [ITU, 2004] and her second on regeneration studies [Cardiff University, 2007]. She attained the title of PhD with her thesis on the sustainability of historic landscapes within the context of neoliberal urbanism [ITU, 2011]. She was appointed as an academic lecturer in 2011 in the very same department she had been working as a research assistant between 2001-2010; and received the title of associate professor in 2013. She serviced as a short-term visiting lecturer in Bauhaus-Universität Weimar Institut für Europäische Urbanistik [2013], Universite Pierre Mendes France Institut D'urbanisme de Grenoble [2014],Universitat Internacional de Catalunya [2015] and Gran Sasso Science Institute [2016]. She coordinated the module of <Socio-economic and cultural challenges> in Technische Universität Darmstadt [2013-2014] and <Sustainable urban conservation> in Universita degli studi di Roma Tor Vergata [2014-2015] under the Mundus Urbano MSc in International Cooperation and Urban Development and MESCI Master in Development Economics and International Cooperation. Her major areas of interests are urban conservation and urban regeneration/renewal theories and policies. Through her scholarly works, she questions the vicious relationship between conservation vs regeneration with reference to globalisation and neoliberal planning agenda; and she explores critical heritage studies including the conceptual framework based on identity, memory, heritage industry, heritageisation, inclusive conservation and right to the heritage. Besides her undergraduate and graduate courses being taught in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning including <Comparative Studies of Urban Planning, Transformation of Urban Systems, Urban Renewal>; she services as a Master and PhD supervisor in ITU [including previous co-supervision in Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and University of Applied Sciences Frankfurt am Main, Gran Sasso Science Institute, as well as Mundus Urbano Programme]. Through her taught courses, she also investigates diverse dynamics in the transformation of urban systems <public space, housing, heritage industry, community governance>, with a specific interest upon urbanisation trends and threats in diverse world urban regions. She is the Erasmus Coordinator of ITU the Department of Urban and Regional Planning. She has several international and national research and implementation projects including <Prizren Municipal Development Plan> under the supervision of UN-Habitat [2012] and UNESCO supported <Istanbul Historic Peninsula Conservation Project> [2003], which was awarded a Medal in in European Union Prize for Culture Heritage/Europa Nostra Awards 2004. She was also awarded with the Emerald Literati Network Outstanding Reviewer [2012] and ISoCaRP’s Gerd Albers Award [2015]. She is the member of International Council on Monuments and Sites [ICOMOS], Association of Critical Heritage Studies [ACHS] and Bureau Member of International Society of City and Regional Planners [ISoCaRP] as the Head of Turkish National Delegation.
