February 2020... Nizam Onur
Sönmez (PhD) is a researcher, writer, architect, and educator. He was
born and raised in Turkey, and graduated from Istanbul Technical
University (ITU) as an architect in 2001. Between 2001 and 2004, he
studied at the same institution for his MSc thesis, titled “The
Situationists, An Architecture for Opposition”, where he focused on the
history and theoretical oeuvre of the Situationist International and
Constant’s utopian project, The New Babylon, as a juncture of post-war
utopian architecture, artistic avant-garde, and radical politics. His
PhD research, which was completed jointly at ITU and TU Delft, and
published in 2015, involved the development of Artificial Intelligence
applications for architectural design (“Evolutionary Design Assistants
for Architecture” https://bit.ly/2V1BMcY). In 2004, he started working
at ITU Department of Architecture as a research assistant, where he
participated in architectural design and graduation studios, beside
other undergraduate and graduate level courses. He became an Assistant
Professor in 2018, and continues his academic activities at the same
department. His academic research is distributed over several paths. His
computational research focuses on the use of Artificial Intelligence
techniques for developing computational design tools. He explores design
and architectural theory for establishing bridges between computational
research, design practice, and research-oriented education; as well as
for better understanding the cultural and theoretical history and near
future of computational approaches. Particularly, he investigates the
design process and the knowledge embedded within existing architectural
examples.
Regarding the political aspects of
architecture, he explores radical, utopian, and visionary architectural
practices and proposals in their relationships with the cultural
histories of science, technology, philosophy, and utopian politics.
Recently, in an effort to bring these diverse lines of research on a
common ground, he focused his investigations on the changing
relationships between nature and architecture, and initiated an intense,
collective probe into post-human understandings and related
discussions. These and related investigations constitute the content of
his recent courses, publications, and invited seminars in various
universities and institutions; as well as his design practice.
Since 2004, he has
