My research is concentrated in the following areas:

Planning policy
  • The transformation of planning policy as a result of major social and economic paradigm shifts. Particularly focusing on the impact of national economic policies on regional and local planning practices.
  • The adoption and transformation of planning policies by various stakeholders; formal and informal processes of affirmation, transformation and resistance.

Spatial planning

  • The definition and operation of functional urban regions as social, economic and political entities.
  • The effects of the mobilities paradigm on spatial planning


Başak Demireş Özkul is Assistant Professor at the Department of City and Regional Planning within the Architecture School at Istanbul Technical University (ITU). She has received her university degree from her current department, a Masters in City Planning (MCP) degree from the Department of Urban Studies and Planning (DUSP) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a PhD in Planning from University College London, the Bartlett School of Planning

Prior to becoming a faculty member at ITU in 2014 she worked for four years as a researcher and INTERREG IVB project coordinator at the University College London Bartlett School of Planning. She also worked professionally between 2001 and 2006 in Boston, Massachusetts as a Real Estate Project Coordinator and Real Estate Project Manager at a community development corporation Emergency Tenants Council/Inquilinos Boricuas en Accion.
